Are we on the brink of a global emotional crisis? Neuroscience & Nationalism | Dr Tara Swart | TEDxLSE
Tara asks the question ‘Are we on the brink of a global emotional crisis’ by looking at the global political climate from a neuroscientist’s perspective at the TEDx event at the London School of Economics.
In answering the question, Tara examines how human evolutionary history has created an ‘us vs them’ culture due to the brain’s survival emotions, loss aversions and unconscious biases becoming wired into our thoughts and opinions.
However, neuroscience research has shown us that the brain is not hard wired to hate or mistrust others and these behaviours can be unlearnt or overwritten. By understanding why these emotions in the brain might arise we can learn to repress these biases and regulate our own fears and emotions, thereby reaching our fullest potential as individuals and helping to create loving and trusting societies.
